Medicine, Patients and Society I: This course for 1st-year students focuses on the physician/patient relationship using case studies and patient presentations. The course combines lectures with small group teaching, and faculty is drawn from both the Department of Psychiatry and the College as a whole.
Medicine, Patients and Society II: 2nd-year students role-play interactions between patients and physicians in order to learn the major components of the Mental Status Exam. Psychiatry faculty present lectures and meet with students in small groups.
Brain and Mind: Psychopathology Component: 2nd-year students interview patient volunteers from the inpatient units. The class is divided into 10 small groups split evenly between Payne Whitney Westchester and Payne Whitney Manhattan.
Brain and Mind: Problem Based Learning (PBL) Component: Lectures are presented on various topics and psychiatric disorders. Small groups present and discuss three well-known paper cases, and faculty members moderate discussions and facilitate students' intensive library research.
