Geriatric Psychiatry Program Rotations

This ACGME-accredited one-year geriatric psychiatry residency program trains two physicians per academic year. Fellowship trainees must be graduates of a four- year general psychiatry program and must hold a New York State license.

Rotations include:

  1. The Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry Service of the New York - Presbyterian Hospital - Payne Whitney Westchester.
    This service consists of two inpatient units dedicated solely to the assessment and treatment of geriatric psychiatry inpatients. Fellows work on one of the units and receive supervision from two full-time faculty who are board-certified geriatric psychiatrists.

  2. The ECT Service.
    Geriatric psychiatry residents administer ECT to the geriatric inpatients at Payne Whitney Westchester. This aspect of the inpatient service provides a unique educational opportunity, as residents treat their own patients with ECT. A full-time faculty, who is a board-certified geriatric psychiatrist, supervises this rotation.

  3. The Specialized Service for Older Adults.
    This service is an outpatient program composed of both clinical and research components. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in ongoing clinical research studies within the Cornell Institute of Geriatric Psychiatry. In addition, they assess and treat a diverse variety of clinical geriatric outpatients. Two full time faculty, who are board-certified geriatric psychiatrists, supervise this rotation.

  4. The Amsterdam Nursing Home.
    The Amsterdam Nursing Home is located in Manhattan and is a 409-bed facility providing long-term care within a residential setting and short and long-term rehabilitation care. It has an Adult Day Care Center that serves 40 community residents per day. It also serves hospice patients via an affiliation with the Jacob Perlow Hospice whose staff provide hospice care including pain control. The faculty consist of a full-time board-certified geriatric psychiatrist and a full-time internist certified in Geriatric Medicine who is the Medical Director. Geriatric Medicine Fellows and Faculty of Geriatric Medicine and other specialty programs of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital provide medical care at Amsterdam Nursing Home and are available for consultation. Full-time rehabilitation staff is provided by Hospital for Special Surgery.

  5. The Consultation-Liaison Program
    The Consultation -- Liaison Service is located in Manhattan at the New York -- Presbyterian Hospital Payne Whitney Manhattan campus. The faculty consists of two full time consultation-liaison psychiatrists who are board-certified in psychosomatic medicine and two voluntary faculty attendings. They provide daily supervision during this rotation and teach the consultation-liaison didactics in the didactic curriculum.The Geriatric Psychiatry Residents provide consultation and liaison services to elderly patients of medical, surgical, physical medicine and rehabilitation floors, intensive care units and the emergency room.

  6. The Psycho-Oncology/Palliative Care Rotation
    The Psycho-Oncology/Palliative Care Rotation is held at the renowned Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, New York. The faculty consists of two full time consultation-liaison psychiatrists expert in psycho-oncology and palliative care. One of the faculty is board-certified in both geriatric psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine. Geriatric Psychiatry Residents develop skills in psycho-oncology/palliative care evaluation and the use of psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic treatment approaches to geriatric patients in an acute cancer hospital setting. Residents also consult with medical staff on special problems of geriatric cancer patients such as delirium, capacity assessment, bereavement, geriatric cancer pain management, drug intolerance and drug interactions.

  7. The Housecalls Program
    This rotation is a pioneering psychiatric outreach service for the homebound elderly designed to remedy important gaps in geriatric mental health care and education. The population is patients who receive their medical care from the Geriatric Medicine Housecall Program at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. The program is organized as a multidisciplinary team and has clinical, teaching and research aims. It provides comprehensive medical care in the home setting to over 63 homebound elders residing on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Housecall services are supported by private donations and grants. Geriatric psychiatry residents see patient cases with the above geriatric medicine faculty and with medicine residents. A full time board-certified geriatric psychiatrist, supervises the Fellows. They have ongoing collaboration and bi-directional education and clinical exposure to both geriatric medicine and geriatric psychiatry.

  8. Selectives
    Three types of Selectives are offered:
    1. Individual reading/literature review under supervision and development of a review paper or case report
    2. Research with faculty. Residents will learn the clinical research methodology as well as recent research findings in a selected area of geriatric psychiatry. This experience will consist of hands-on research, participation in seminars and supervised reading by a senior clinical investigator
    3. In addition, a resident may, based on his/her interests, propose an in-depth area of study and identify a suitable mentor subject to approval by the Geriatric Residency Education Committee.
